Retiring in style »

Retirees have worked their whole life to reach this point, may as well do it in style! Here we feature a variety of upmarket retirement homes in what some now refer to as mature lifestyle estates.

Only by getting a tour around the award winning Waterfall Valley estate do we understand the scale and majestic facilities. Waterfall Valley is certainly not the proverbial retirement village but rather... more »

Outstanding reasons to use a pellet fire place »

Pellet fireplaces are currently the most cost-effective heating solution in South Africa. The cost of electricity and gas are rapidly increasing, while their supply can be erratic at peak times. With the new 8% year on year tariff increase approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, the price of electricity will soon reach the R2.00 per kilowatt mark.

The running cost of a pellet fireplace is currently less than half the running cost of equivalent electrical and gas appliances in the market, and will over time become even more cost effective... more »

An architects weekend house »

Kleinwingerd, meaning “small vineyard”, is an architect’s weekend house located on the edge of the agricultural town of Prince Alfred Hamlet, located in the Warmbokkeveld valley, an important deciduous fruit growing area in South Africa.

The design is a pragmatic and regionalist response to the climate and heritage of the area. The main accommodation in the long barn plan form... more »

Raising hope for Layla »

Four-year-old Layla O’Neill from Lonehill suffers from a rare condition called Neuroplasm Glial Ependymoma. This is your chance to help, we did!

The tumours on Layla's spine cannot be surgically removed as they could paralyse Layla for life. Her only hope is proton treatment which is only available at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas. Layla’s mother Sharyn O’Neill explained, "The treatment itself costs R2.8 million and the doctors have told us we need to do it right now, I will never give up hope for my daughter, I will do anything I can to get her this treatment."

Save your rands; build with sand »

Sandbag building is now being introduced into KwaZulu-Natal after 20 years of successful building in the Western Cape, where it’s been used to construct many diverse structures, from double-storey houses to large commercial structures.

The system is fully endorsed and supported by the NHBRC. The one thing that we have taken for granted and yet have used so often is the sandbag. We have used sandbags for good protection, sound insulation and even shelter from bullets. So should it really be that difficult for us to believe that we can build a house from sandbags? ... more »

Homes that tread lightly »

For Melissa and Dan Brown, moving to South Africa from the USA just over five years ago offered a luxury that had eluded them for almost 20 years and one which we so often take for granted: space.

The rambling, rocky surrounds of Century Property Developments’ Helderfontein Estate in Fourways, Johannesburg, couldn’t have offered a more inspiring site. ‘The estate is like no other we’ve ever seen. It’s packed with trees and boulders that have been left unspoiled for decades and is a far cry from the concrete jungle of Hollywood, where we could go days without seeing a bird,’ says Dan... more »
